Seminar 2008!

Hi everyone

The application forms for the seminar are now available at UCT, UWC and Stellenbosch, also under 'Seminar 2008' on the website. They must please be submitted by Friday (22nd August) either to the respective offices indicated on the forms or electronically to Emma.Webber@gmail.com, with proof of payment attached. If it is difficult to pay the R200 now (we all understand the end of the month blues!) then please indicate on your application form when and how you will make payment after payday (we will be able to collect cash from attendees on arrival if necessary).

SSLSJ Hosts Justice Mokgoro!

Exciting news!

The SSLSJ is proud to invite you to join us for a public debate on the LLB degree, the transformative requirements thereof under the Constitution, and the technical requirements of legal practice. Justice Yvonne Mokgoro will be addressing us on the Constitution and its transformative mandate, while Professor Anton Fagan will be discussing his views on the effect of the Constitution on private law (controversial and engaging views as always!) and Advocate Geoff Budlender will be looking at the requirements of the profession and the LLB's preparation for practice.

SSLSJ regrets to announce ...

Hi Everyone

Unfortunately I am forced to announce that the second study group session has been postponed. It will take place on a weekend in the near future, and I will circulate further information as soon as I have it. I apologise for any inconvenience (or disappointment) caused.

Study Group Session Two

Greetings SSLSJ-ers!

Study Group Session One

Hello All

A quick note with two parts. Firstly, the first study group session is scheduled and confirmed for the 15th of July at 3pm in the Smit Marine Room in the Kramer Building, with Advocates Geoff Budlender and Gilbert Marcus. For more information please see www.sslsj.org.za, and please note there is a short preparatory reading for this session, follow the link below to download it from the website.

Anti-xenophobia campaign

Hello SSLSJ-ers!

Thank you for your enthusiastic response to the call for volunteers to support the Anti-Xenophobia Task Team. There has been an overwhelming and powerful civic response to this disaster and the SSLSJ is proud to be a part of this movement and to be a resource of volunteers for TAC and other organisations co-ordinating relief initiatives. It is for this reason that I am writing to you all again.

Both the TAC and the UCT Refugee Law Clinic have made requests for volunteers over the next few weeks. If you have some time to dedicate towards the various initiatives please contact me by email as soon as possible. The TAC need people in the office working closely with the task team on various projects, while the Law Clinic needs people (preferably law students) to help educate displaced people about their rights - there will be a training session to this end on Monday morning. A few days of work will make an important contribution to the efforts of the communities of Cape Town to protect the rights of people still displaced by the recent violence. You can help.

URGENT APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE: Registration of Displaced Persons

Dear friend

As a result of the current xenophobic violence a large number of people throughout the Cape Peninsula have been displaced from their homes and are being provided refuge in four main centres around Cape Town.
