Study Group
The first study group session is planned for the 15th of July at 3pm in the Smit Marine room on the 5th floor of the Kramer Building. Advocates Gilbert Marcus and Geoff Budlender will be running a session on the history of legal activism in South Africa, by conducting a comparative case study of the Komani test case of the 70's and the TAC case won in the post-constitutional era. They have requested that we read this article so that we can have more of an interactive discussion and not just a historical lecture from the two of them. It promises to be a very interesting and engaging discussion, and we look forward to seeing you there. To that end, kindly rsvp to Emma Holtmann on emmaholtman@gmail.com to confirm your attendance.
For the second session Mark Heywood and Adila Hassim of the Aids Law Project will be flying down from Johannesburg, on the 26th of July, to present and discuss concepts of the philosophical basis for legal activism in South Africa, an enriching topic!
The third session, run by Zackie Achmat, is currently scheduled to take place on the 9th of August and include a discussion of the future of student activism in South Africa as well as the future of the SSLSJ.
More details on the second and third sessions will soon be forthcoming, diarise them tentatively in the meantime!
